I am having the exact same problem. I tried what someone suggested which was
to re-register Word (run "winword /r") but that didn't do anything. For some
reason .doc files or Word files are the only ones that don't have to neat
looking Office style icon. It just stays the same old wordpad icon. HELP
PLEASE!

One more thing I noticed. When I select a .doc file in Windows Explorer the
info at the bottom of the screen says "Type: Wordpad Document
Author:......" and so on. So it seems that even though Word will open when I
double-click on the file it is somehow still not registered correctly.
Thanks for any help.

Re-registering Word should have fixed its file associations (try it again
then reboot), but if it hasn't, right click a document in Windows Explorer
and select Open With and choose Word. Check the box to always open with
Word. If that doesn't fix it, you will have to edit the DOC file association
from Explorer - tools folder options file types doc.

Doing it again didn't work. I've even tried completely reinstalling Office.
I've also already tried the two methods you suggested below. It's
interesting because when I edit the DOC file association from Explorer it
shows the Word icon next to the DOC file type and if I restore it back to
Wordpad it changes back to the Wordpad icon. Then, as I'm doing this the
Explorer window flashes as if it is refreshing to update the new icon, but
nothing actually changes. It's as if the Word icon doesn't exist or is
somehow confused with the Wordpad icon. Is there any way to directly control
the icon that is diplayed for a certain application so I can change it
manually? And if so, where can I find the Word icon to change it to? Thanks.

You can change the icon from the Explorer tools folder options file
types advanced dialog. The Word icon is in the Winword.exe file.

Thank you so much. However, when I went to change the icon it didn't give me
the "advanced" button at first. I first had to "restore" the file type back
to its original program (wordpad), then change the icon with the now
available "advanced" button, and then change the program association back to
Word. Thanks for your help.
