Hi Daff,
I have a protected form document in Word 97. The document also contains embedded .pdf documents. I have sections defined so that the .pdfs are not protected. But when I double click to open the .pdfs, nothing happens, as if they are protected. How do I get them to open? Even in unprotected sections, certain features are disabled. Activating OLE objects is one of them. You'd need a macro to remove protection, do the activation, and later reinstate protection. You might be better off to use a hyperlink, or a MacroButton field that will OPEN the file, from disk.
