Default page numbering

I am writing a paper where I don't want to number the first two pages or the
last page of the paper. However, I can't get Word to cooperate. I have
tried splitting the paper into sections and start the numbering on the third
page but it goes ahead and numbers the first two pages anyway. How do I
number these pages and omit the others?
