Default Word 2003- unable to rename saved document

when i save document and then try to rename it i get error message. If you
change file name extension, the file may become unstable. why is this
happening
used same office program on last puter no probs, just loaded it on new puter
and get this all the time why, somebody help me

Are you changing the extension? If so, then you could cause problems. If you
rename a .doc file a .pdf and try to open it, your computer will try to open
Reader, not Word.

This is not an Office feature/warning. It's a Windows thing.

how do i know if i am or not. how do i change it?

Where/how are you trying to rename this file? Since you don't know *if* you
are, then I can tell you that you *are*.

It sounds as if you don't have file extensions displayed. This is
inadvisable (and in some cases dangerous). In Windows Explorer, go to Tools
| Folder Options | View and clear the check box for "Hide file extensions
for known file types." Then, when you are changing a filename in an Explorer
window (this includes Word's Open dialog), be careful not to change or
delete the file extension.
