Default Word 2000 performance using large network stored files

I have a user complaining of very slow performance working on a 243 page list
of addresses in a table. The file is on our network. In Word 2003 there is
an option to "make local copy of files stored on network or removeable
drives". This option makes a huge difference, but my users don't have Office
2003, they are using Office 2000. Is there any comparable setting in Word
2000? Or are there any other options?
