Windows XP can't find the Normal.dot file i need to change the template..
any ideas where it's likely to be. I've 'checked' the "show hidden files and
folders" button but still nothing...

You should find it in the folder at the end of the path given for "User
templates" on the File Locations tab of Tools | Options.

I use XP as well, but couldn't find it using the solution exactly as given
below. But it did help. What I did was open Word, highlight the document
and delete everything on it. Then I hit "Save As" then used the drop-down
field in the tool bar; selected C: (my hard drive); Documents and Settings;
(my) user name; Application Data; Microsoft; Templates. I saved it as
"Normal1". Then, using Windows Explorer, I went into the "Templates" folder
mentioned above, deleted "Normal" and renamed "Normal1" as "Normal". Now I
get a blank document when opening Word and Outlook.

Sorry, that procedure does *not* give you a complete Normal.dot.
You'll find you don't have any of the default AutoText or AutoCorrect
entries that a real Normal.dot has.

Since you now know where Normal.dot is :-) try renaming it as
Normal1.dot and restarting Word. When the program doesn't find a
Normal.dot, it should build a new one.

Default Templates

My C:\Documents and Settings\(my_user_name)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
is *empty* (even when I show hidden files). I when I restart Word it is
*not* recreated. I searched All (C:\) for Normal.dot in vane.

I tried to save an empty doc as (Normal1.dot) then rename it to (Normal.dot)
and the next time I created a new doc in Word, it did take styles from the
new Normal.dot I just created. But as mentioned above: "that procedure does
*not* give you a complete Normal.dot". So I then deleted it, hoping now Word
will "build a new one" but it did NOT.

I am stuck with my default Styles and I would like to change them. Any Ideas?

P.S. I'm using Word 2003

Thanks

When you delete or rename normal.dot and perform any kind of customization
that gets stored in normal.dot (styles, menu, keyboard, toolbar, macros),
Word *does* create a new one. It might be hidden, but it is there. It might
not show up if Word is open, even with hidden files displayed.

Choose Tools - Options - Save, and click to enable Prompt to save Normal
template. You can turn this off once you're done if you like, but many like
to keep it turned on since it nice to know when something unexpectedly
changes normal.dot (it's like a burglar alarm for Word). Then, make some
kind of modification to a style (enabling the Add to template option in the
Modify Style dialog).

Check Tools - Options - File Locations tab - User Templates. This is where
Normal.dot is stored. Note that location.

Now, close Word, and choose Yes to saving changes in Normal.dot. With Word
closed, check in the User templates folder, Normal.dot will be there.
