Default Word 2002 Can't open existing word files

I installed a MS Word patch and no Word does not work. If I try to open an
existing Word file, I get the following message: "The file file-name is not
available." Also, when I try to exit Word, I get a message asking if I want
to save changes to the template file (I have not made any changes). I then
have to go through several windows asking if I want to save changes,
requiring several no responses before I can close Word.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs with
the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.

I disabled Norton Antivirus and restarted the machine with the exact same
errors. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I did not suggest that you disable Norton Antivirus.
