Default Word 2002

I hope this is an appropriate forum for this question.

Word 2002 document with 12 point font. When I change to an eight point font,
the text no longer spans the width of the column. Is there a format/tool
procedure that will keep the column width the same when changing the type
size?

TIA, Sarah's Boy
