Hi Group,
I would like to create a file / folder hierarchy representation in a Word document but I don't really want to be using spaces, tabs or a table. Is there such an object or component that can be used for this purpose? A colleague of mine suggested using Visio for this because it can handle this sort of thing very well but we are out of licenses and this project does not warrant purchasing a new license. Basically I want something like this (but more polished): drive +----folderA +----folderB +----fileA +----fileB +----folderC (apologies if the whitespace has been removed making the above unreadable). Thanks, Max |

Hi Max-
You can do this with Bullets & Numbering, but you would have to customize for the +/- signs as well as type the various items. As an alternative suggestion, if you want realistic accuracy & polish, why not take a screen shot of the Windows Explorer window and put the graphic in your doc? Set the Explorer (or Open, Save As, whatever) window to display as you want, then Ctrl+Alt+PrtScrn, then rt-click in the doc where you want the image & choose paste from the shortcut menu. Resize & modify as necessary like most any other picture. IMHO, that is not only more effective but also faster & easier. Why work any harder than you have to if you can get even better results? Thanks, CyberTaz.
The screenshot method was considered and I really ought to have mentioned that in my original post. The trouble the hierarchy is being taken out of an other application, not Explorer, and the full heirarchy is not al visible on a single screen This means taking multiple screenshots and pasting them together. Also, another fact I should have mentioned, is that the hierarchy may not be static. I may need to make changes to it in the future which would mean more copy 'n' paste. Good suggestion though. I have a 30-day trial of Visio installed so that will help me for now. If I need to update the doc in the future then I will need to use someone else's PC or we may get another license. I will check out your bullet suggestion, that certainly sounds like it has some promise. It never occurred to me to format bullet points. I can't find it right now on my drive, but if you mean
you want to print an indented text listing of folders and files, there are many good ones available for free. I just did a google search for "print folder list" (with the quotes) and it turned up lots of them. Worth trying a couple. Maybe someone on the group here recalls the better ones? Or one? g Pop "Max" wrote in message ... Hi Group, I would like to create a file / folder hierarchy representation in a Word document but I don't really want to be using spaces, tabs or a table. I just wrote a long reply, Microsoft asked me to login again and all my text
was lost. That's why this reply will be much shorter. ![]() A good suggestion PopS but not for this requirement. All I want to do is represent a file / folder hierarchy in a Word document, I don't want to actually automate the process e.g. by pointing to an actual file system. I am using InstallAnywhere and it has a tab names "Files" that lists all the files / folders to be copied to / from during the installation. I want to capture this data and put it in an external document (in Word) for documentation reasons. Visio seems to be working for now though. You might want to look at SnagIt. It can capture more than you can display
in a single screen (it is capable of scrolling captures), from any application, and save it to any graphic format you like. See www.techsmith.com. I think there may be a free trial offer. -- Suzanne S.
