Default Can I straddle two or more columns or rows in a table?

I am using Word 2003 and need to straddle two or more cells in a table. How
can I do this?

Is this something that merging cells will accomplish?

Yes... I am trying to adopt terminology from an Adobe product called
FrameMaker to Word. They refer to the process as "straddling". Thanks for
your help.

Select the two or more cells you want to combine, right-click, and choose
Merge Cells.
