When I'm typing a document on my laptop the cursor sometimes returns to an
earlier point in the document and the text is inserted from this point and
not the end as it would normally. All this happens without warning and has
almost cost me course marks.

Is it possible that you are pressing SHIFT+F5 while you are
typing?
