Default File, Open, click arrow in "Look in" long delay

In Word 2003, when I go to File, Open and then click the arrown in the Look
in dialogue box, I have to wait what seems like an eternity but is about
30-60 seconds for any response. When I press the arroe a second I get an
error message Open (Not Responding). What gives?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
