Am working on a project manual and having lots of trouble deleting the
footers on the existing manual. Need to change section name/number and
number of pages to each section.

You haven't given enough information to get a real how-to, but a few
important points:

Header/footers are best manipulated by using View | Header/Footer and the
Header/Footer toolbar. Avoid using Insert | Page Numbers--use the icons on
the h/f toolbar instead.

By default, headers/footers are linked to the previous section. If you need
different text in each one, you need to unlink them. Use the icon on the
h/f toolbar.

If the section name that you want in the header/footer is *also* in the
text, you can use a StyleRef field to change the name in each header/footer,
instead of unlinking the sections and setting each h/f up separately.

In addition to what Daiya has said, the fields you want are { SECTION } for
the section number and { SECTIONPAGES } for the number of pages in the
section.
