If you don't have a version of Word that comes with proofing tools for
German, you will need to get the Office Proofing Tools:
Office XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/prev...prooftools.asp
Office 2003:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/edit...fingtools.mspx

oThe site mentioned does NOT show any possibility to buy only the German
Spellcheck; it only shows the possibility to purchase a proofing tool for 50
(fifty) languages - at a price, of course. I would appreciate a more precise
answer to the question.

It doesn't get more precise than Suzanne's answer. If the version of Word
that you have doesn't include the German dictionary (different regional
versions of Word have different included dictionaries) then the only choices
are to buy the proofing tools or a regional version of Word that includes
German. The dictionaries are not sold separately.
