Stop "FILENAME" from printing in header and footer via Autotext
When I'm in header/footers and I insert FILENAME via the Autotext menu the
fieldcode name "FILENAME" prints. Here's an example: FILENAME myfilename.doc Can someone tell me how to stop the FILENAME from being included (and printed). It is not an invisible field code name, it actually prints on the document" |

Tools--Options--Print. Uncheck Field Codes.

Are you saying that the field name "FILENAME" is printing instead of the
actual file name? If so, then choose Tools - Options - Print tab, and remove the check next to Field Codes. Or, are you getting both the field name as well as the file name? If that's the case, then press Alt+F9 to reveal field codes and see if for some reason the actual word "FILENAME" is present outside of field braces. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. http://www.herbtyson.com "jim" wrote in message ... Yes, I am getting both the field name as well as the file name. I pressed
Alt+F9 and the word FILENAME is not in field braces. There is a square on either side of it. What should I do to permanently fix this? Thank you in advance for helping me fix this. I sent you an email earlier. It's important to note that this problem is not
only when I select Filename, it's whenever I select any item from the Autotext menu while in Header & Footers. If I select "field" from the Insert menu bar at the top of the screen and make a selection, the problem does not occur. To try to solve this problem while in Header/ Footer, I have selected customize toolbar and deleted and re-added Autotext. However, that does not solve the problem. I didn't receive an email from you.
So... when you choose the Filename AutoText, you're getting []Filename[] { FILENAME } Where I'm using [] to represent squares you mentioned. Note that for some of the other AutoText entries, you're *supposed* to get some text, too. For example, when you choose Created by, you should get: Created by { AUTHOR } I wonder if perhaps someone has modified your FILENAME AutoText entry. To see, choose Insert - AutoText - AutoText.... Scroll the list to Filename. What do you see in the preview window? Does it say Filename without field braces? If so, then the text is actually part of the AutoText definition. You can try replacing the built-in { FILENAME } AutoText entry: 1. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces. 2. Type FILENAME between the braces. 3. Select the field, including the braces, but not including any trailing spaces or paragraph marks that follow }. 4. Choose Insert - AutoText - AutoText. Scroll down to Filename, select that entry, and click Add. Click Yes to confirm redefining the entry. Now test and see if Filename from the AutoText menu gives you the expected result. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. http://www.herbtyson.com "jim" wrote in message ... This worked. Thank you.
However, as I said in my earlier email, this problem is not only when I select Filename, it's whenever I select ANY item from the Autotext menu while in Header & Footers. If I select "field" from the Insert menu bar at the top of the screen and make a selection, the problem does not occur. To try to solve this problem I even reinstalled MS Word and the problem still reoccurs. Since it appears ALL of my Autotext items (only in Header/Footer) are screwed up, can you recommend how to solve the root problem. Is there a file I could copy from another computer (I am using a Mac OS 10.4.2, MS Office 2004) that would fix this. It is very laborious to fix each one individually. Also, when I've tried to replace items like "Page X of Y" I always get an extra page break (There's no way to NOT select the page break symbol). Thank you again. Reinstalling only helps if you Remove the program first.
See if your Normal template might be corrupted. For a Mac, use these instructions--see the Testing section: http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/MacWordNormal.htm (hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser) A new Normal template will have fresh clean AutoText items. It's conceivable that trying to install without un-installing properly messed up your program, so you might need to remove and reinstall to clean up the system. But see if the new Normal template works first. http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm (hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser) By the way, there are Mac-specific newsgroups as well: See here for Google/Entourage gateway to newsgroups for MacWord, MacExcel, and other MS programs for the Mac: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups On 9/29/05 6:48 AM, "jim" wrote: This worked.
