I have Word 2000 and MS works suite software already: 1) Can't I download and
use what I have???? and, 2) if I want to purchase Word 2003 after my trial,
what does it cost??

Just a long shot as I've not idea what your circumstances are, but if
you're considering buying Word, it may be worth you looking at
OpenOffice. It's free and the word processor has much of the core
functionality of Word.

Although your post is cryptic, I'm going to guess that (a) you just got a
new computer with the Office 2003 trial version on it, and (b) you have an
older computer with some version of Works Suite (including Word 2000)
installed. How you proceed from there depends on how you got Works Suite.

1. If you purchased a retail version of Works Suite (it did not come
installed on your old computer), then you can uninstall it from your old
computer and install it on the new one. IIRC, Word 2000 does not require
activation; if it does, you may have to use the phone option.

2. If Works Suite came installed on your old computer, then it is an OEM
version and is not licensed for any other machine. If that is the case, then
you have two choices. You can purchase and activate Office 2003 (see €śHow to
convert a Office 2003 Trial Edition to a Full Retail Edition€ť at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831023), or you can buy a new copy of
Works Suite, which will include Word 2002. Needless to say, the latter
option is much less expensive. Works Suite 2005 currently retails for under
$100 (with substantial discounts available from many online sources), and a
$20 mail-in rebate is in effect through January 1, 2006.
