Default Index or TOC

I am trying to put a song book together and am really battling with a
contents page. The issue is that I do not want the page number reflected, but
the song number which in turn should be auto-assigned. The index then should
be alphabetical by first line of the song.
Sounds so simple, but alas, I cant get it right.

What I tried:
I marked the first line of each song as {XE}, which is great and does the
alphabetic sorting for me in the index. But I cannot win with the sequence
numbering.
The other way around I tried is making the first line of each song a
auto-numbered header, but that then wont sort alphabetically but by that
number.
I went through all the help there is on toc, index, etc. Even asked all our
secretaries, but am stuck.

PS - My background is Excel, not Word

Auto numbering does not prevent alphabetic sorting. That's the whole idea of
auto numbering: when you change the order of the entries, the numbering is
updated. But if you want the songs to be numbered in order and their order
is not alphabetical, then yes, you run into problems unless you unlink the
numbering before sorting.
