Default Problem with Advanced selection Criteria

XP version does not perform as did 2000 version. While demonstarting use of
the advanced selection criteria found that search criteria has some issues.
Have a spreadsheet of customers extracted from the Access Northwind Traders
sample database I use for mailmerge training.

Am accustomed to being able to change the selection criteria which then
changes the mailing labels generated. Spreadsheet includes fields for country
and region.
First we start with all customers selected while designing the label layout.
Then I go back and change teh advanced selection criteria. If I choose first
field Country Equal to USA and select OK. The selection list shows all USA
customers and the labels change to only show USA customers (sometimes)

However, a problem arrises when I go back and add a second criteria
following the first country = USA. I use the AND connector, set region not
equal to WA. The selection criteria list dispalys only those USA customers
not in Washington. However when I check the OK box the labels display for
ALL(worldwide) customers except those in WASHINGTON. It appears that Word is
either looking only at the last criteria entry OR it is reading the AND
operator as an OR.

The process worked just fine in 2000 and 98. Am I missing something in my
process? Any suggestions to make this function more in line with previous
versions?

Thansk in advance for the service you provide!

Default Problem with Advanced selection Criteria

Although, I would always use a query in Access to control the records that
are available, I am unable to replicate the problem that you are
experiencing following the steps that you describe.

I don't disagree with use of access, but my peers are working in Word with
some Excel experience. My use of the Excel spreadsheet of customers was
simply to demonstrate the mailMerge functionality
