Default merge fields

Why are my merge fields in WORD surrounded by a ghosted rectangle. And why
does this rectangular print. It never used to ....how to avoid?

If when you say "ghosted rectangle", you mean a shaded background, it
indicates:

1. That under ToolsOptionsView the Field Shading is set to be
displayed.

2. You are not actually executing the merge, but merely printing a
preview of results in the mailmerge main document
