hello:
my customer has called this morning and says when she goes to open her saved word documents, there is the symbol ~$ in front of her documents. I have seen this before on my unit also. Is this a backup document, or is this when a documents hasn't been closed properly? It showed up today but she was out of the office yesterday? Thank you for your assistance. steve |

Files named with ~$ are Word's working scratch files while a document is
open. Noramlly, these are deleted when a document is closed, but will remain if Word crashes, or is terminated with Task Manager. If no word files are open, these can be safely deleted. -- Ted |

This is the "owner file" created when you create or open a document. For
more information, see €śDescription of how Word creates temporary files€ť at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 Ordinarily the owner file is deleted when you close a document. If Word hangs, the system crashes, or you lose power, these temporary files will remain and can be deleted with impunity when the file is not open; see http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm -- Suzanne S.
