The Equation editor allows you to type mathematical statements, but
does not actually calculate the result. Try INSERT, OBJECT, CREATE
NEW, (MS) EQUATION

See http://spot.pcc.edu/~ssimonds/thisandthat/msword.htm for some basic
help on entering equations.

Insert Object Microsoft Equation

If that menu function isn't there, you'll need to install it from
your Office or Word disc. I don't think Equation Editor is part of
the default install.

Once Equation Editor is open, you can use its help function to see
what to do. There's also a good page of tips at
http://www.mathtype.com/en/products/ee/ee_tips.htm

For samples of its output, see

and

In addition to the Equation Editor, you can use an EQ field - harder to
master, but more flexible when it comes to controlling fonts, positioning
and line spacing.

Cheers
