Default deleting 'lines' in Word docs.

How can I delete an across-the-page line, created by continuous pressing of -
or = and then 'return', from text in a standard Word document? If I select
and try DEL it doesn't remove it ...I've had this problem for years (with all
previous versions of WORD) and am quietly going mad...
