When replacing a letter in a misspeled word the letter next to it is deleted.
This is repeated each time a letter is replaced. |

You probably have Overtype enabled. Either double-click OVR on the status
bar, clear the check box on the Edit tab of Tools | Options, or press the Insert key once (the last is the way you probably got into this fix). -- Suzanne S. Thanks so much. You were right I had inadvertently pressed the insert key.
