Default "Saving as" a file

When I open a file and click "Save as", instead of the "Save as" box opening,
the name of the file flashes in the bottom bar. I have to click on that
flashing name to stop it, then a message appears saying "Do you want to
revert to the original file?" If I click yes, the file window opens. If I
wait about 15 seconds after opening the original file I want to save, this
doesn't happen - it goes straight to the "save as" box. Why is it doing this
and how can I avoid it?
