Default split screen vertically to show two documents

Windows XP and Word 2002. MY monitor is 19", so plenty of room for two Word
text documents side by side. Is this possible? With such a vertically split
screen can the two documents be worked on separately, as with a horizontally
split screen? Advice much appreciated.

Word 2003 has a "Compare Side by Side" feature; for previous versions, you
just have to open documents in separate windows and tile them vertically.
