Default Template constantly changing

How do I stop my template from changing? Every time I tweak a style up pops a
new style. It's just killing me. Can't I make minor changes without Word
creating a new style????

Thanks.

Tools | Options | Edit: clear the check box for "Keep track of formatting."

Thank you. Do I have to do this each time I open Word? Or each time I open a
document?

No. Options settings, unless labeled otherwise, are application-wide.
