Default shift+9 - ( doesn't work on word documents

When I am typing in a word document and want to use the Parenthesis, I hit
shift+9 and the only change that happens is that the cursor moves over one
space. When I backspace the "(" appears. How can I fix this problem so that
it will work properly and show me the "(" right away?

You probably selected an international keyboard layout in
Windows. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306560 "How To
Use the United States-International Keyboard Layout in Windows
XP", except that you want to select the standard U.S. keyboard
instead of the U.S.-International keyboard.
