Default Why can I only open one document at a time in Word 2003?

I can only open one document at a time. When I open try to open a second file
it closes the one that was open and saves it.

This wasn't happening before today. I installed the Service Pack 2 this
morning, could that have something to do with it?

Does this happen when you click on the "piece of paper" in the upper left? By
doing this, it should minimize your current document and give you a plain
sheet.
