Default CreateDate field not correct

I have a one page document that is divided into two sections. The bottom
section is locked (it contains form fields). The top section contains a table
with a CreateDate field in it.

The document is saved on SharePoint... when I access it and save it (to a
non-Sharepoint location) the CreateDate field doesn't update... so I select
it and press F9... it then changes but to a date that doesn't mean anything.
The Document Properties... they are showing the correct Creation date.

The field code properties a CREATEDATE \@ "d-MMM-yy" .

If I re-save the document a second time then the creation date will update
to the correct date.

Can anyone tell me why... and how can I get it right the first time?
