A lot of time is wasted by people making changes, edits, etc., to a document
only to discover, at the END of this process, that they're working in a read-only file. The read-only status of a document should be apparent from the start, to avoid wasting the user's time and effort, and the current (read-only) comment in the title bar isn't sufficient. In the tradition of error Prevention being better than Recovery, I suggest that Office apps automatically DISABLE all but a few functions when a read-only document is open: scroll, print, and Save As should be all that's available. Only when you've saved the document with a new name (or turned off read-only protection) would you be able to make and save changes, edit, re-format, and so on. ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes.
