Default file conversion problems

I can no longer insert or open into a Word document my JPG or pdf files. I've
done this for years but now when I try to insert a file, the file conversion
screen shows up with the Windows (default) box checked. The preview is
symbols, letters and numbers and that's what shows up in the document. I am
using Word 2003, Small Business Edition. What have I done and how can I fix
it?

To insert a JPEG, use Insert | Picture | From File, not Insert | File. PDFs
cannot be inserted in Word unless converted to a graphic or text first.

Single page PDFs can be inserted (as an object) if you have Acrobat 7 reader
installed. As reader 7 has not been available 'for years' and as previous
versions didn't have this capability it seems the OP was exaggerating

Thanks. I'll start doing it that way. I'm sure though that I formerly was
able to insert a JPG file by clicking Insert | File. I'd like to know why I
can't now.
