Default Word password protection doesn't work

I've protected files in the past, but today when I tried it didn't work. I
put the password in under the options/security tab and everything seemed
normal, but then I checked by saving and then opening the file again and I
wasn't prompted for the password, the file just opened. I have all of the
current updates.

Hi ?B?QnJpYW4=?=,

And you're saving as a Word document (*.doc) and not to the old Word 6, RTF or
any other file format?

If you create a new document and test with that, does it work for the new
document?

Yes, I'm saving it as a .doc document. The new file protection worked fine.
Thanks for your help.
