How do I type a capital letter "S" with a line above it?
Hi,
I'm taking a logic class and need to find out how to type a special character read as "S bar" that consists of a capital "S" with a line above it. Can anyone help me? I've searched everywhere online, but I can't find anything. Best, Amanda |

One way is to use an S followed by an Advance field, followed by _.
For example: S{ADVANCE \l7\u14}_ where the braces are created by pressing Ctrl+F9, produces an S with a bar above it in 12 point type here. You'd probably need to experiment with the \l (left) and \u (up) point values to acheive the effect you want. The ADVANCE field is used to precisely position the character that follows it. In this case, it moves the _ character back 7 points, and up 14 points, positioning it over the S. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP http://www.herbtyson.com Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. Thank you for the quick response. I've tried to use this like you said, and I
can get the little brackets to come up and everhthing, but after I hit shift + _ nothing happens. I tried pressing enter, but again nothing. Mine looks exactly like yours. Is there something I am leaving out? I also tried it using the other way that Mrs. Barnhill recommended, but it leaves a gray box behind it. That way does work. But is there any way to get rid of the gray box? Again thank you for your responses. Amanda "Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote: One way is to use an S followed by an Advance field, followed by _. Mrs. Barnhill,
Is there any way to get rid of the gray box once the text appears within the field code? Thank you so much for your quick response earlier. I had been searching for a few days with no luck. The grey box is a non printing field indicator. You can turn off the display
from tools options view field shading. Set to 'when selected' is a good compromise. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Kherisma wrote: Mrs. Barnhill, Is there any way to get rid of the gray box once the text appears within the field code?
