Default Word should let you choose whether or not you want to track change

In previous versions, you could apparently turn it off and never use it. In
2003, it is there and can't be escaped from. Please make it an option.

I don't find this true at all. Occasionally I receive a document from
someone else containing tracked changes, in which case the Reviewing toolbar
is displayed and the view set to Final Showing Markup, but other than that,
I never have Track Changes turned on in any of my documents, new or old.
Perhaps you are inadvertently pressing Ctrl+Shift+E or Alt, T, T?
