Default Shading part of the text in a table cell

I want to shade some but not all of the words in a cell within a Word table
(eg I want to shade the person's name but not the comments about them). When
I try this, all of the text on that line gets shaded.

How are you applying the shading? I don't see this if I go to Format |
Borders and Shading and make sure that "Text" is selected rather than
"Paragraph" or "Cell."
