I would advise you to ask in a newsgroup about your operating system (as in
Windows XP). This group is about Microsoft Word. All the advice I can give
you about Word is to not use removable media with Word. Use Word with the
hard drive and then copy files to removable drives and back.

Formatting a disc will remove the files or access to them. Are these files
on a floppy that you have been using directly with Word? If so you will
eventually corrupt the disc and get a message that the disc is unformatted.
You may be able to recover some of the files with file recovery software.

Never ever read from, write to, or print from floppy with Word. These are
the most certain methods of ensuring document corruption.

Copy to the hard disc and work on the document from there.

This is equally relevant to other removable media such as CDRW.
