Sorry folks, but I'm still having trouble with this book.
The printer says his people cannot convert this document
to a pdf file and they don't know why. I am guessing it
is because the book consists of so many different
materials with so many different formats.

I make that assumption because the author copied and
pasted hundreds of quotes from the Internet and each
quote has its own, original format. Then they sent it to
an editor who worked on it and also put it into a 5.5 X 8
format.

They didn't like her work and so sent it to me. I worked
on it and then converted to the same 5.5 X 8 format.

However, I am unable to "unlock" some of the paragraphs,
that is, I cannot block indent or change them in any
way. Some of the footnote titles and chapter titles
cannot be aligned to the left or even justified at all.

The question: is there any way to eliminate all former
formatting from the book, (given all its sources) and
start fresh? I thank you all very much.

It depends on what these 'locked' items actually are. For starters, you
could try --

SaveAs, selecting Plain Text as the 'Save as type'.

or

Copy the entire document and PasteSpecial into a new document, selecting
'Unformatted text' as the paste type.

Are some of the "locked" items really scanned images or some other
kinds of graphics masquerading as text?
Around here we "repurpose" all kinds of things...

And- anything that can be printed can be PDFd. Sometimes it takes
"printing to file" and then distilling that file, rather than using
Acrobat's nifty icon on Word's toolbar...

That's mostly true, but a little bit sweeping. Some document complexities
really are beyond Acrobat's ability to deal with (try nested embedded
objects). And the problem can be worse with the shareware Acrobat clones,
some of which fall over for all sorts of strange reasons, eg using
non-TrueType fonts.

Even so, if you can get the suckers to print to a PS printer, you
should be able to make a PS file and flog it from there.
Sometimes you can create the basic doc using Acrobat's PDFmaker from
within Word, and it will have the bookmarks and hyperlinks but it will
have really ugly graphics problems.
You can then use whatever other methods to create PDFs of teh graphics
pages, then use "pagereplace" in Acrobat.
That keeps hyperlinks and bookmarks in place, while replacing the text
and graphics on the pages affected.

One more thing- consider OpenOffice. The release version 1.13(?) has
limitations in PDF bookmark creation, but the Beta releases 1.9x have
that fixed. The price is right, and it is a pretty good package!

No, these items are just text. He just copied and pasted
quotes from all sorts of places.

Well, now things are even worse. A friend came to the
rescue and put the mes into a pdf But when I reviewed
it, there were still a number of items that had danced
around such as the Table of Contents, Footnotes page,
etc. And, of course, there is no way for me to "unlock"
them and he wwent to Europe! i tried one of the
inexpensive programs online someone suggested (on a
diffrent copy of course) and that didn't work. Thanks so
much for putting up with my seemingly unending problem.
