I have a reasonably simple document template that I want to set in place as
the template from which all reports are created. I would therefore like to
stipulate that only the styles currently used in the template are allowable.
Is there a simple option that will 'only allow styles currently in use'?

No. If you want users only to use your styles (which can be limiting) then
you must train them to do so.

If you and your users have Word 2003 you can limit formatting to a
selection of styles. See:
