Default Adjust underline spacing

Is it possible to push the automatic underline a little further away from the
text? It touches the descenders of Times New Roman 9 pt right now. I would
like to push it about 3 points away.

Thanks!

It's not possible to do this with an underline, no. But you can use a border
on the text or paragraph. Text borders are a bit farther away but cannot be
customized (see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm); the
distance from text can be adjusted for paragraph borders.
