I've never heard of WordPad getting locked.

Are you referring to Word, instead? If so, then it's possible that you have
a trial copy that has expired, or that you have a non-trial copy that needs
to be activated. If it's the former, you'll need to buy a copy. If it's the
latter, then see Help - Activate Product.
