Word2003 had a built-in menu "Work" that I use all the time. Is there such a
thing in Word2007? I can't find it. |

Hi Bob,
The Work menu has been removed. The replacement is "pinning" one or more files in the recent files list. Click the round Office icon to open the File menu, and notice the "pushpin" icon to the right of each file in the recent files list. If you click a pushpin to activate it, that file won't fall off the list as you open other files. To let the file become a candidate for removal again, click the pushpin to "unpin" it. In the Word Options dialog, you can now set the length of the recent files list up to 50 instead of the previous limit of 9. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Thanks. That's even better. I haven't found anything in Office2007 that's
not better than it was in Office2003. Greate job!!! "Jay Freedman" wrote: Hi Bob, The Work menu has been removed. The replacement is "pinning" one or more files in the recent files list. I hope that will be changed. For some reason users are really annoyed by
deleted files appearing on the MRU list. I guess you could reduce the number of files on the list to a number that would eliminate the offending one. I just did a couple of little experiments and found this behavior:
- In Word 2003 (and presumably all earlier versions), if you have a larger number of files on the MRU, reducing the setting and then increasing it again permanently removes the bottom of the list. That is, if you set the MRU from 9 to 2 and then put it back to 9, the File menu continues to show only files 1 and 2 until you start opening more files. - In Word 2007, reducing the setting doesn't remove the bottom of the MRU, it just hides it. Restoring the setting to the larger number brings back the full list. The exception is that setting the MRU to zero completely clears the list, and it isn't restored by increasing the setting. I can understand to some extent why users are bothered by having deleted documents in the list -- if you click one by accident, you get a message box (and in 2003 it contains a lot of "helpful" information that _doesn't_ include "this file may have been deleted"!) that needs an extra click to dismiss. There is no equivalent of the Getting Started task pane, thank goodness -- what a waste of electrons that was. In general, there's been a big effort to reduce the redundancy in the UI, which is mostly a good idea. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Ah, thanks. Perhaps Jay has that shortcut assigned to something else? As
long as the shortcut works, that's all we need (after all, it's all we have now). But it would be really handy (and users would thank MS), if you could right-click on an MRU list entry and get a shortcut menu that included Remove or Delete. It could perhaps also include Move Up, Move Down, etc. Maybe in Word 2010? -- Suzanne S. Maybe it's because I'm running Office 2007 in a virtual machine...
If I open the File menu first and then press Ctrl+Alt+hyphen, apparently nothing at all happens. Clicking any file name opens that file. If I press Ctrl+Alt+hyphen while the File menu is closed, then open the File menu, the cursor changes back to an arrow -- it looks like the destructive cursor is _gone_. But clicking a file name does delete it from the MRU. I think this is somewhere between disconcerting and dangerous. The weirdest part is that if I hover over a file name *and press and release Ctrl twice* then the destructive cursor reappears. This is starting to feel like voodoo... -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. This does sound like a display issue. In previous versions of Word, when you
press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen, the cursor appears as a hyphen when summoned, changes to an arrow when you hover over the menu bar, and then changes back to a hyphen when you hover over a menu. The fact that it still appears as a hyphen over the toolbars is a bit disconcerting, however. -- Suzanne S. I hope someone will bug that because I can see this being a major pain point for some users. -- Suzanne S. "Jay Freedman" wrote in message news ![]() - In Word 2003 (and presumably all earlier versions), if you have a larger number of files on the MRU, reducing the setting and then increasing it again permanently removes the bottom of the list. I guess you could reduce the number of files on the list to a number that would eliminate the offending one. Also, is there anything comparable to the Getting Started task pane that has the same MRU list? |
