How do I stop my document from updating dates and times in Word
Open the document and press Alt+F9 to display field codes. You'll find
that your date is in fact a DATE or TIME field, something like this: { DATE \@ "M/d/yy" }. Replace the DATE or TIME part with CREATEDATE, and then press F9. Press Alt+F9 again to show the field result. CREATEDATE, unlike DATE and TIME fields, will show the date the document was created. As a next step, you can include the CREATEDATE field in a template, which will give you the correct date for documents based on that template. Alternatively, make sure to type in the date as you create a document. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Robert Diggs" wrote in message ... How do I stop my document from updating dates and times in Word
Hi Robert,
Your description indicates your document has a DATE field in it. These are designed to update automatically. You could lock it, via Ctrl-F11, but that doesn't get you back to the original date. Other possibilities are to use a CREATEDATE field or a PRINTDATE field instead. The CREATEDATE field shows when the document was first created, or last saved via Save-As, and the PRINTDATE field shows when the document was last printed. You can change the date field to either of these by selecting it, pressing Shift-F9 to expose the field code and changing 'DATE' to 'CREATEDATE' or 'PRINTDATE'. There's another date field, 'SAVEDATE', which shows when a document was last saved, but that probably won't help here (unless you want to temporarily show when the document was last saved), as changing the existing field changes the document and you can't save the change without the 'SAVEDATE' updating ... You are using a DATE or TIME field rather than a CREATEDATE field. This
field should be put in the original template if possible (instead of inserting using the keyboard shortcut or header/footer toolbar button). In the document in question, press Alt-F9 to display field codes. Then change the field to a CREATEDATE field, press F9 and then Alt-F9.
