Default when I start a new document there is only 1 page instead of multi

how do I edit page numbers?

Default when I start a new document there is only 1 page instead of multi

Page numbers are inserted by means of a field in the page footer. If you
start a new document, of course there is only one page!

In Word, you don't add pages, you add contents and Word adds pages as
required. Once the document has more text that can fit on a page, a
soft break will be inserted automatically.
