In my Word document, some of the lines I have typed out are underlined and
have vertical lines in the margins. Why did this happen and how can I change
it back? This is a document that I keep adding to.

Sounds like you have change tracking turned on. The underlining and vertical
lines are marking the changes you made to the original document.

You can turn change tracking off by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+E or by
double-clicking on the TRK in the toolbar at the bottom of your window.

You can change the way that tracked changes are marked by going to Tools -
Options - Track Changes.
