Hello,

In the spirit of "there's no such thing as a stupid question", is it
possible for body text style to apply itself.

Thanks,

Yes, Body Text (as well as other built-in styles) might be applied
automatically by Word. To stop it from happening, clear the "Define
styles based on your formatting" option on the AutoFormat As You Type
tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options. Actually, it's a good idea to
disable most of the options in that dialog box, except for the ones
listed under "Replace as you type". See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm.

Body Text may also be selected as the "Style for following paragraph" for
another style, such as a heading style. I have modified most of my heading
styles to be followed by Body Text rather than Normal.

So the culprit wasn't Word, but one of its styles! :-)
