Default cross reference deletes surrounding text

When I insert a cross reference in one section pointing to a paragraph number
in different section, all preceding text in the paragraph containing the
cross reference code disappears: it can't be seen on screen, in normal or
print layout views, or in print preview. However, when page is printed text
prints correctly.

Using Word 2002, multi-section document, numbered paragraphs created with
Legal PacPac.
