Hi!
Each of you, please tell me, what was the biggest and most complex document you ever created/edited with Word? Please, specify number of pages, amount and complexity of tables, amount of styles etc. Did you experience any problems with huge documents? What did it look like? I'm going to create and maintain very big document in Word 2003 and I just would like to know what problems or issue I may be faced with. Thanks! |

SAVE OFTEN! I see a lot of posts from people who don't save files or decide
to try something different and save over the "good" draft. If you're going to try something experimental, save it and then save it with a new name. Then try your experiment. -- JoAnn Paules MVP Microsoft [Publisher] "Dustdisk" wrote in message ... Hi! And do not trust Word's Versions feature. Use Save As FileName#5, Save As
FileName #6, etc. On 8/18/06 7:00 AM, "JoAnn Paules [MVP]" wrote: SAVE OFTEN! John McGhie has reported up to 10,000 pages in one file, and has some advice
at these links: One Professional¹s Steps for Writing a Book http://daiya.mvps.org/booksteps.htm Planning a Book Project http://daiya.mvps.org/bookproject.htm You'll need quite a bit of RAM to handle that many pages in one doc, though, and that's not necessarily the best approach. There is a page full of useful links for dealing with extremely long documents here (sorry, format is a little off just now): So You Want to Write a Book with MS Word http://daiya.mvps.org/bookword.htm Reading through the Overview, General Principles, and Basic Techniques sections will give you a sense of the best practice options, and problems people have run into. Also, see especially this page: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...platePart2.htm Which is about creating a technical manual rather than a book, so has a slightly different slant, plus is shorter. And also: Layout Planning: Advice from a Professional Typesetter http://daiya.mvps.org/layoutplan.htm And finally--there is a newsgroup dedicated to long documents, and your further questions will be seen more easily there, rather than in this group which is rather crowded. http://groups.google.com/group/micro...g.longdocs?hl= en Searching the archives there may also help answer your original question. Hope that helps! On 8/18/06 6:24 AM, "Dustdisk" wrote: Hi! Each of you, please tell me, what was the biggest and most complex document you ever created/edited with Word? Shows you how "old school" I am - I've never used Versions. I've always used
testfile1, testfile2, etc. Sounds like I should be glad about that. -- JoAnn Paules MVP Microsoft [Publisher] "Daiya Mitchell" wrote in message .. . And do not trust Word's Versions feature. Thank you all (especially Daiya Mitchell) for these really helpful information!
The document I'm creating in Word will have about 350 pages, lots of small screenshots and tables, about 40-50 different paragraph styles and about 40 sections (each section will represent a separate chapter with its own "section-wide" table of contents). Actually, I'm converting two FrameMaker documents into a single Word document. Glad to help--
One more link that I haven't updated my page to have: http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm Addresses creating a TOC for part of the document. Word should be able to handle your doc without a problem, assuming you've got a decent computer.
