If the text on the left is repeated from headings in your document --
that is, if you're making a table of contents -- then use Insert References Table of Contents. The dot leaders, page numbers, and alignment will be created automatically. If you're just typing a list manually, use Format Tabs to set a decimal tab at the right margin and choose a dot leader (the series of dots between the text and the numbers). Type text, press the Tab key, and enter the number. Having a decimal tab will ensure that the numbers align on the last digit instead of the first. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Having a decimal tab will ensure that the
numbers align on the last digit instead of the first. Generally a right tab is used (including in the TOC field). Unless page numbers include a separator of some kind, I can't see the point of a decimal tab, and in fact, if they are chapter-page numbers (1-1, 1-2, 1-10, etc.), this will cause the right side to be out of alignment, since the numbers will align on the hyphen. -- Suzanne S. The position should be the measurement that will put it at the right margin.
If you're using Word's default Blank Document, which has 1.25" left and right margins, this will be 6". If your margins are 1" all around, it will be 6.5". Select right alignment and select the radio button for the appropriate type of leader (periods, in this case). Much the easiest way to do this is to set a right-aligned tab at the right margin using the ruler, then double-click on the tab marker to open the Tabs dialog and add the leader. -- Suzanne S.
