Inserting filename in footer in Word 2007
How can I insert a filename into the footer. I go to the "Header & Footer"
section of the "Insert" tab, and all I see are options to insert a header or a footer or a page number. There is no "filename" option in the insert "text" section. Jeez, I spend so much time trying to find common functions with this 2007 interface. |

It sounds from your msg that you are using Word 2007.
I can tell you how to do this in Word 2003, but it sounds like you might already know that. In case I'm wrong, here's how to do it. The way it's done in Word 2003: on the menu, click on View / Header and Footer the Header and Footer toolbar will appear click on the "Switch Between Header and Footer" icon on this toolbar click on "Insert Autotext" on this toolbar click on "Filename" or "Filename and path" "Ron G" wrote: How can I insert a filename into the footer. Not meant to be sarcastic. It's follow-up to an earlier thread about MVPs'
not reading subject lines. But the full subject line (and I don't know why you're not seeing it) is "Inserting filename in footer in Word 2007." If you can't see the full subject line, then I suspect others can't, either, which is yet another argument for repeating the necessary details in the message body. -- Suzanne S. I didn't see the earlier thread.
I totally agree that people should put the question in the msg body. Some of the postings get answers, and I don't even know what the question was! I do appreciate all the good help you give. Inserting filename in footer in Word 2007
Hi Ron,
There are a couple of ways you can do this. A 2007 variation of the previous version method that Patricia mentioned: If you're in the Footer you can use Insert=Quickparts=Field=Filename or Header & Footer Tools=Design=Insert=Quickparts=Field=Filename To be able to reuse that entry (and retain the consistent formatting and positioning) you can then select the field entry you just added with your cursor and save it as a 'building block' by clicking through to Insert=Quickparts=Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery 1. Give the Building Block a name of your choosing. (for example 'Add a Filename with Path) 2. Choose the 'Footers' gallery for the location. 3. For category, you can make your own or add it to the default 'Built in' Note that once you add a building block, the gallery entries are displayed alphabetically by gallery, category and name with 'built-in' the first default category. If you want your entry to be in the 'top section' of the gallery you can name a Building Block category something along the lines of 1. My footers and your category will appear first when you choose Header & Footer Tools=Design=Header & Footer=Footers when you are *in* the header or footer. Header & Footer Tools=Design=Header & Footer=Footer It should also appear in the Footer gallery when you're in the body of the document and use Insert=Header & Footer=Footer but there's a small buglet in Beta 2 where *sometimes* your new entry it won't appear instantly in that 'main' gallery unless you first try to add another entry while you're in the body of the document or open and close Word. ========== "Ron G" wrote in message ... Inserting filename in footer in Word 2007
Hi Bob, Thank you very much for your reply to my question. Where do I find
"Header & Footer Tools"? I am disappointed in Microsoft for turning such a simple operation in 2003 into a major expedition in 2007. I seem to spend a lot of time searching for common tools (and there does not seem to be a tools section any longer) where MS has changed its name and stuck it in some hidden sub category. When I try and find them using help, help doesn't have a clue. sorry for the rant. --Ron "Bob Buckland ?:-)" wrote: Hi Ron, There are a couple of ways you can do this. Inserting filename in footer in Word 2007
Hi Ron,
To get to the header or footer in a Word 2007 document double click in the top or bottom page margin area while you are using Print Layout view. Once the header or footer 'outline' and title marker appears click into the header and above the ribbon you should see anew, green tab 'Header and Footer Tools' and below that a Ribbon tab titled 'Design' which holds the controls and galleries for this. ========== "Ron G" wrote in message ...
