Default File - open: documents no longer listed alphabetically

I've used MS Word for many years, and have never had this problem until
today. When I click on "file" - "open", instead of seeing a list of all my
documents in alphabetical order (including subdirectories), I see a
jumbled-up mess of titles in no order. How can I fix this so documents are
again presented alphabetically? Thanks.

In the Open dialog box click on the word Name (with a triangle beside it) at
the top of the list to sort into alphabetical order again.

Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately, when the Open dialog box opens in
my copy of Word (MS Office Pro 2003, SP2), there is no word "Name" anywhere
on the list, nor is there a triangle. Instead, the word currently at the top
of the list is one of my document titles beginning with the letter O.

Rae is describing what you would see in Details view. You're
probably in List view or Icons view, so you can right-click on a
blank part of the file name display area, and left-click on
Arrange Icons By | Name.

"Never mind. . ." ;-) I stumbled on the solution: when I accidentally
right-clicked the open dialog box, one of the choices that popped up was
"arrange icons by name." Did so, and everything is alphabetical again.
